538 (R538) - Torsion spring for Novoferm sectional garage doors
Price:
220.41 EUR + VAT
The springs are galvanized on both the outside and inside. Their lifting characteristics are identical to those of conventional (538) springs, so they lift the door with great precision. During adjustment, tension the spring by the same number of turns as the previous spring. The required tension value is indicated on your Novoferm garage door. An aluminium spring tensioning cone is not included. The spring's service life is equal to or longer than that of the original.

Which spring do I need?
- The spring may have a yellow or white label. This label shows a three-digit number, sometimes preceded by the letter L or R. For example: 538 or R538
- The number is sometimes also shown on the door's data plate.
- If you cannot find the spring's model number in either of these places, measure the springs on both sides according to our Measurement guide. Also take photographs according to our Photography Guide.
If you are unsure which spring you need, please do not purchase it yet; call us instead!
What are the length and diameter of the 538 spring?
We do not list the physical dimensions of the 538 spring because measuring a stretched or broken spring and identifying it from those dimensions is very difficult. There are many opportunities for error. A measurement discrepancy of just a few millimetres may lead you to choose the wrong item from the list. In addition, some online stores list inaccurate dimensions for the original springs. Customers select approximately one in every ten springs incorrectly and then have to return it to us. This adds unnecessary cost and delay. Please measure the springs on both sides according to our Measurement guide and email us the dimensions. Also measure the width and height of the door and send us a photograph of the door's data plate.
If the spring pictured above only resembles yours, please contact us instead of buying the wrong one and losing several days while it is returned and a replacement is dispatched.
Different springs on the same door?
Yes! Novoferm doors do not necessarily have the same (538) spring fitted on both sides. They may look identical, but may not actually be the same. Check the label on both springs, or check the data plate if the labels are missing.
Do I need to replace both springs?
No, you do not have to, but it is advisable. Do not replace both springs if you cannot afford to do so; the spring on the other side may last another year. If you can afford both, however, it is worth replacing them together because you will only pay one installation charge. Garage door technicians usually recommend replacing both springs because the spring that is still intact can sometimes break while the other is being replaced. This is very inconvenient for technicians, and it can be difficult to explain to the door owner that the breakage was not caused by an installation error. Overall, if possible, have both springs replaced to minimize problems in the long term.
Before installing the 538 spring
If possible, do not use the Novoferm sectional garage door until the new 538 springs have been installed. If you must use it, manually compensate for the force of the broken spring. Disengage the spring break safety device so that the door can be closed. When operating the door with a garage door opener, lift it by hand at the same time. When closing it, also support some of the door's weight.
While installing the 538 spring
Because of its strength, the new spring may not need to be tensioned as much as the previous one. Check the data plate for the specified tension.
After installation
If you feel that the new 538 spring is not working correctly, please contact us. We will help determine whether an installation error has occurred. If you accidentally ordered the wrong spring, we will help you find the correct one for your door.
Does the 538 spring break frequently?
A spring on a residential Novoferm door usually lasts at least five years, and may last as long as 17-20 years. If a spring lasts less than five years, there are three possible reasons. Two are related to incorrect installation and one to excessive use. These are explained below.
Reason 1: excessive door use
A residential Novoferm door is designed to be opened only a few times per day. If everyone in the household also uses it as a pedestrian entrance, the intended number of operating cycles can easily be multiplied, and the spring may need replacing every 2-3 years. The simplest solution is to use the pedestrian entrance instead. In some situations, however, traffic cannot be reduced—for example, when a residential door is installed at an apartment building. If 20 cars rather than two are parked behind one door, the door is clearly subjected to ten times the load. Residential Novoferm doors cope surprisingly well with this, but more frequent servicing should be expected. A high-cycle 538 spring can be a good solution. We can custom-manufacture springs with the same lifting force as conventional 538 springs but capable of many more operating cycles. Unfortunately, these springs are not yet available in our online store. If you would like to purchase one, please contact us using the details below.
Reason 2: excessive tension
Check the value shown on the data plate (Federspannung: x,x) and tension the spring accordingly. Please note that this is only an approximate value and may occasionally require a slight adjustment. A new spring can sometimes feel too strong; in that case, tension it less than the specified value. The spring is adjusted correctly when the door remains stationary halfway open instead of moving up or down by itself. Check it again after one month to see whether the spring has weakened enough to require further tensioning. Tensioning the spring beyond the value specified by Novoferm can significantly shorten its service life. We consider it over-tensioned when it is tensioned by more than half a turn above the value specified on the door. Never over-tension the springs!
Reason 3: coils binding
Another common problem occurs when the coils bind together. Closing the door tensions the spring. In this tensioned state, there should be a small gap between the coils—enough to insert a sheet of paper. If you can do this, there is no problem. If you cannot, the coils must be separated. WARNING: RISK OF INJURY! Have the coils separated by a qualified professional.
